Book List Revision

Currently, I teach these books for E238:

The Metamorphosis, In the Penal Colony, and Other Stories by Franz Kafka

We by Yevgeny Zamyatin

Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf

Untouchable by Mulk Raj Anand

One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Flight to Canada by Ishmael Reed

My Name is Red by Orhan Pamuk

These texts work surprisingly well together with the overarching thematic of ‘colonialism’ to structure the class’s organization.  I focus on freedom, identity, subjective vs objective reality, and the restrictions that limit these concepts due to pressures from society (colonialism).  Also, these works follow the criteria of the gtPathways goal of presenting ethnic and major historical events from the 20th Century literature to non-English majors.

Although these texts are enjoyable and satisfy the course requirements, I find them to be a bit repetitive after 5 semesters.  Here are the ideas I have for my new book list:

A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess

All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Ramarque

Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Night by Elie Wiesel

Snow by Orhan Pamuk

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe

The structure of this class will be very similar to the previous version with many of the same themes though I will most likely have to modify my major lectures to fit these new texts.
